Match Report

Rhyl made an encouraging start to the pre-season schedule with a 5-1 home win over FC United of Manchester at the Corbett Sports Stadium for Manager Niall McGuinness new look Lilywhites.

The Vanarama National League North side were cheered on by a sizable away following who were in good spirits for the trip. With this strong backing FC United made a number of good chances however it was the Lilywhites who converted chances into goals. In the 18th minute good link up play between Jay Whitehouse and Kristian Pierce saw Pierce lay off to Rob Hughes who set up to Andreas Alvarado to put the Lilywhites 1 – 0 up.

FC United continued to apply the pressure and were unlucky to draw level as the half went on with Jerome Wright, Scott Kay, Sam Sheridan, Matthew Wolfenden and Harry Winter all going close.

At the start of the second half both sides made a number of substitutes and whilst FC United continued to look lively it was Rhyl who made the more decisive impact. A mistake by FC United in their own box, set up one of the Rhyl Trialist’s to score and double Rhyl’s advantage in the 53rd minute. This lead was extended further 3 minutes later as Kristian Pierce latched on to a chance and finished with a chip shot over the keepers head to put Rhyl 3-0 up.

Tom Greaves brought FC United back into the match with a goal in the 65th minute when his good movement created the chance to shoot and Mike Askew in the Rhyl could only get a hand to the powerful shot.

However Rhyl continued to create chances and as the match entered the last 10 minutes Zyaac Edwards scored twice in the space of 5 minutes. In the 80th minute Zyaac was in the right place to feed off a save from the FC United Keeper and he thundered in the 4th goal for Rhyl. Then 5 minutes later he took advantage of a darting run by one of the trialist to slot home the chance past the FC United Keeper.

Overall this was an encouraging start to pre-season for Manager Niall McGuinness young squad as he looks to build a team capable of erasing the disappointments of last season from the Lilywhites faithful’s minds.
