Rhyl vs. Cardiff Met
Corbett Sport Stadium
A tight game at the Corbett Sports saw Rhyl emerge victorious with a 1-0 win thanks to a 90th minute strike from super sub Rob Hughes.
The second win of the week for the Lilywhites has seen them climb into 5th position in the league, a perfect response to the TNS game only a week ago.
In a game of few chances, a tireless Rhyl side were given their reward when, in the dying seconds, Rob Hughes drilled the ball into the bottom corner sparking mass celebrations on the pitch, dugout and stands.
The first half proved to be scrappy affair, the only real chance came as Adam Roscrow raced clear for the visitors, but one on one with the keeper, was only able to tap wide with team mates in space.
Oliver Buckley went off injured for Rhyl and tempers flared when a couple of late challenges from Cardiff Met flew in.
The half petered out with the score at 0-0.
The second half was the complete opposite and Rhyl began with a quick tempo however they were unable to fashion a clear cut chance against a resolute and organised Cardiff Met defence.
As well has being strong in defence, the visitors nearly took the lead and were only denied when Collins cleared off the line from a back-post Lam header.
Owen Evans then produced a magnificent diving save, palming the ball away after Roscrow thumped a shot towards the corner from the edge of the area.
The Lilywhites worked tirelessly as the clock ran down and finally broke down the Cardiff Met defence - Toby Jones chased a seemingly hopeless ball and kept it in. After a couple of passes on the edge of the area, Rakim Newton found Rob Hughes lurking on the 18 yard line and Rhyl winger took his chance, his low shot found the bottom corner and nestled into the net.
Two games and two wins in a week for the Lilywhites who now look forward to a tough test against Airbus at the Corbett Sports on Saturday 10th September.
