It was a night to forget for the Lilywhites as Aberystwyth celebrated their new 3G pitch opening in style with a 4-0 win against Rhyl.
The first goal was one of those which will be remembered for a long time, unfortunately for Rhyl for all the wrong reasons. Aber goalkeeper Chris Mullock launched a free kick from fifteen yards inside his own half and he caught Rhyl keeper Owen Evans off his line and the 65 yard effort sailed into the roof of the net to put the home side ahead. A minute later and Rhyl were further behind as Geoff Kellaway headed home a cross from Chris Jones.
Rhyl battled to get back into the match in the second half but a second freak goal killed off the chances of a come back. Evans went to clear the ball but Luke Borelli charged down the clearance meaning he could walk the ball into the empty net. Rhyl's misery was completed two minutes later as Mike Sharples was caught out by the bounce of the ball on the new surface which left Borelli with a one on one with Evans which he put away.
Rhyl's misery was compounded near the end as a brawl developed and Alex Jones saw red and another 5 players were booked.
