Match Report

Rhyl lost their first Huws Gray Alliance match of the season in a disappointing performance at home to Ruthin Town.

The first half saw few clear cut chances for either side with the best spell for Rhyl coming just before the end of the half.  A free kick into the box saw Tony Davies rise up but his header was comfortably saved by Ryan Goldston and then a scramble in the penalty area saw Gerwyn Jones unable to force the chance home from close range.  Then on the stroke of half time a mazy run from Chris Boungou was halted by a cynical challenge from Ilan Hughes which earned the Ruthin skipper a booking and the resultant free kick into the box saw a Gerwyn Jones header comfortably saved by Goldston.

As the second half progressed Ruthin began to create the better chances, Llyr Morris looked a threat all evening and a neat turn and shot in the 50th minute was comfortably saved by Rory Crowther.  The best chance of the match came to Llyr Morris but as he broke into the box in the 69th minute but Crowther bravely saved to deny the chance of a goal.

The game changed in the last 15 minutes as Llyr Morris was judged to have been fouled in the area and the referee had no hesitation to point to the spot following the challenge by Tony Davies.  Llyr Morris got up and calmly scored the penalty to claim his 10th goal of the season.

In the last 15 minutes Rhyl pushed forward for an equaliser with substitute Cory Williams at the heart of most of the chances whilst Jordan McCarter was unlucky when his shot from outside the area went narrowly over the bar.

Rhyl's best chance came with six minutes to go when Ruthin failed to clear a high ball into the box and the ball eventually fell to Mark Connolly but his overhead shot from close range was saved by Ryan Goldston.

The full time whistle was the cue for celebrations for Ruthin Town with a famous win over their Denbighshire rivals, whilst for Rhyl there will be much soul searching to be done ahead of the away trip to Penrhyncoch at the weekend.
