Rhyl FC 3 - 1 Airbus UK Broughton

Home | 28 October 2017 | Attendance: 324

Rhyl put in a fine performance to defeat Airbus UK Broughton as the current leaders were grounded at the Corbett Sports Stadium

An attendance of 324 saw an entertaining game as both sides from the first whistle showed a desire to play football and get forward.

It was Rhyl who opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Alex Titchiner played in Mark Connolly down the Rhyl right and the Interim Manager drove into the box and fired home a low shot past Andy Coughlin in the Airbus goal to put the hosts 1-0 up.  Three minutes later Rhyl doubled their early advantage when Tom Walsh was played in down the left hand side and he showed great composure to flight a delightful finish over Coughlin and into the back of the net.

Airbus immediately set about getting back into the match as Mark Jones hit the post and Leo Riley shot narrowly wide but the Lilywhites showed good composure in the defence with James Brewerton and Tony Davies keeping a solid shape alongside Jason Jeffries and Gerwyn Jones.

Rhyl had a great chance in the 21st minute when Tom Walsh broke down the left and his low cross was met by Titchiner but Coughlin was able to save from close range and then at the end of the half the roles were reversed as Titchiner fed in Walsh but once again Coughlin was on hand to make the save.

The second half continued in an open manner, Rhyl seeing the link up play between Phil Marsh, Titchiner and Walsh creating chances but Airbus managed to get back into the game in the 67th minute.  A low ball from the Airbus right was met by young striker George Peers and he made no mistake from close range.

To Rhyl's credit they held firm with the pressure from Airbus and were dangerous on the break as the visitors sought the equaliser.  From one of these breaks Alex Titchiner broke clear in the 86th minute and the referee Cheryl Foster had no hesitation to point to the spot when Stefan Edwards committed a foul on the Rhyl striker. Connolly came forward to take the penalty but his shot to the keepers right was saved.

Both chances battled hard in the last few minutes and the visitors were lifted as 5 minutes of injury time were added on.

However it was the hosts who were able to clinch the points in injury time.  A corner was cleared and Alex Titchiner took possession drove into the box and fired a low shot past Coughlin to ensure the hosts claimed a much deserved win after a great team performance.
