Rhyl FC 3 - 1 Holywell Town

Home | 30 December 2017 | Attendance: 512

Rhyl finished off 2017 by clinching a hard earned 3 points against Holywell Town in the Huws Gray Alliance. The 3-1 win saw Rhyl move up to third place in the Huws Gray Alliance, seven points off leaders Caernarfon Town.

With the wind in their favour in the first half Holywell made life difficult for the Lilywhites with Rhyl struggling to get into their rhythm. For the visitors ex Lilywhite Steve Lewis posed problems for the Rhyl defence and he had the best chance of the half when his shot was saved by Rory Crowther mid way through the half. Holywell continued to make more of the conditions and once again Steve Lewis was the main threat as his shot was saved and then the ball rebounded around the defence before being hooked clear.

With Rhyl failing to create a worthwhile chance in the first half Manager Mark Connolly changed things around at half time bringing on Alex Titchiner for Phil Marsh and the change made an immediate difference.

A good run by Alun Webb stretched the Holywell defence and he was able to lay the ball back to Titchiner who finished calmly from the edge of the box to put Rhyl into the lead in the 48th minute. The goal saw the hosts surge in confidence and 5 minutes later their advantage was doubled as a good chip into the box from Titchiner saw Mark Connolly guide his header past the stranded Shawn Pearson in the Holywell goal to put Rhyl 2-0 up.

As the second half progressed Holywell sought to get a foothold back in the match but were nearly further behind as a Titchiner shot was turned round the post by Pearson.

Holywell were able to get back into the match in the 69th minute when Tony Davies and Lewis chased the ball in the box and when Lewis went down the referee consulted with his Assistant before pointing to the penalty spot. Sam Jones stepped up and fired a well taken penalty down the centre as Crowther dived to his left.

Holywell began to mount pressure on the Rhyl defence but became vulnerable to Rhyl breaks and one such break was to ensure Rhyl claimed all three points. Titchiner was set free and he advanced on Pearson and was able to shoot past him from just inside the area to ensure that the Lilywhites finished 2017 in a winning fashion.
