Match Report

Rhyl Ladies were defeated 5-1 at home to a determined Abergavenny Womens FC at the Corbett Sports Stadium. The opening 15 minutes saw both sides play entertaining football with Yasmin Mills bravely denying an early opportunity for the visitors whilst a Laura Williams shot went narrowly over. This pattern continued for much of the first half and on the 24th minute Rhyl Ladies had a great chance to take the lead. Good play enabled Emily Jones to shoot from the left and the shot was saved by Charlotte Hastings in the Abergavenny goal and the rebound fell to Ashleigh Mills and once again Hastings was able to deny Rhyl the breakthrough goal.

However it was the visitors who were to take the lead. A scramble in the Rhyl area following a corner saw the ball eventually fall to the feet of Maxine Mudge and she was able to calmly finish from close range to open the scoring in the 35th minute. The goal unsettled the young Rhyl side and two minutes the later the visitors had doubled their advantage as Amy Thrupp was able to score with a fine shot past Mills. Then, on the stroke of half time, Abergavenny grabbed a third as Maxine Mudge was once again on hand to score with a low shot past Mills.

With the home side looking for a response at the start of the second half they sought to regain their composure but their plans for the half were hampered by the fourth goal for the visitors in the 53rd minute. A good corner from Abergavenny created confusion in the area and substitute Gabi Hughes was on hand to force the ball home. The visitors were close to a 5th 5 minutes later but a fine reaction save from Yasmin Mills prevented Caroline Gardner from scoring an own goal.

In the 66th minute Rebecca Bannister came on as sub for the tireless Paige Williams and made an impact within 30 seconds. The ball came to her around 25 yards out and she hit a superb shot into the top of the goal to bring the hosts back into the game. The goal inspired the hosts and they continued to pressurise the visitors. Once again good link up play enabled Emily Jones to be played in and despite the pull back on her the referee allowed play to continue and her fine shot was saved by Hastings.

The scoring was completed in the 84th minute when Lauren Boyd was able to advance on the Rhyl goal and her shot went past the despairing dive of Mills to give the visitors a 5-1 victory.

For the hosts the match was lost either side of half time but there was plenty of spirit in the performance of Rhyl Ladies to give Manager Tom Jamieson optimism for the season ahead.
