Rhyl FC 0 - 1 Airbus UK Broughton

Away | 14 April 2018 | Attendance: 247

Rhyl’s hopes of a top 3 finish were grounded at Airbus as a below par performance saw the Lilywhites defeated by Airbus who finished their season with a win.

The first half had the shape of an end of season affair as both sides struggled to take a hold of the game on a warm afternoon in weather conditions in great contrast to what has become the norm this winter. Rhyl’s best moments of the half came in the last 10 minutes of the half as Aaron Pomeyie forced a save from former Llandudno keeper Dave Roberts and a good run from ex Airbus player James Murphy fooled the home defence but Murphy was unable to get his shot away when he had the opportunity. Airbus had a few chances mainly from long range which were comfortably dealt with by Rory Crowther back in the Rhyl goal after illness forced him to miss the Holyhead match.

The second half started in livelier fashion with the hosts going close when Ryan Edwards was played in but his shot went over the bar. Shortly afterwards Nathan Quirk forced a fine save from Crowther and then Steve Tomasson had a great chance to score but he failed to convert the opportunity. Phil Marsh had Rhyl’s first chance of the half in the 52nd minute but his low shot was saved by Dave Roberts and the hosts were to get their reward shortly afterwards. Danny Taylor who was a good outlet for the hosts pushing forward from defence was able to get in the right position to take advantage of a good pass and shoot home from close range past Crowther to put the hosts 1-0 up in the 54th minute.

The Lilywhites began to exert some pressure with a good run by Aaron Pomeyie on the Rhyl right but his low cross was unable to be met by Sam Downey as the hosts cleared. The closest Rhyl came to beating Dave Roberts came in the 63rd minute when Mark Connolly who had pushed forward into midfield spotted the keeper off his line and his shot from 35 yards out was tipped over by Roberts underneath the post.

Rhyl continued to press with Phil Marsh going close whilst the hosts thought they had clinched the points 3 minutes from time but their goal was ruled out for offside. A late Phil Marsh free kick was the Lilywhites best hopes but it went wide with a minute to go bringing an end to Rhyl’s run of consecutive wins.

The result means that the Lilywhites drop down to 5th in the table and with only a game to go at Denbigh in midweek a record low finish in Welsh Domestic football is likely to be achieved.
