Rhyl FC 0 - 1 Denbigh Town

Away | 18 April 2018 | Attendance: 190

Rhyl’s season came to an end with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Denbigh Town. Rhyl got off to a promising start with the full backs of Hartley and Jeffries pushing forward stretching the Denbigh defence and linking up with Danny Holland and Aaron Pomeyie but without creating clear cut opportunities for Rhyl to take advantage of. The first good chance of the game fell to Denbigh’s Corey Smart but his shot went over.

Rhyl continued to enjoy good possession but found difficulty in finding the killer ball into the box, with the bigger threat coming from set pieces and the aerial power of Tony Davies coming up from the back. Towards the end of the half Denbigh enjoyed a good spell of possession and created chances with Matthew Worrall shooting wide, Craig Pritchard hitting the post and then Kristian Pierce and Danny Sullivan failing to finish when Rhyl were unable to clear the danger.

The first chance of the second half fell to Danny Holland who came in from the Rhyl left and beat Rakim Newton but his shot went over the bar. At the other end a quickly taken free kick saw Kristian Pierce played in but he was unable to beat Rory Crowther in the Rhyl goal as his shot went over the cross bar.

Rhyl had a strong claim for a penalty when a Danny Holland shot was blocked by a Denbigh arm in the penalty box but the referee waved away the strong claims from Rhyl. A minute later the decisive moment came after a loss of control from Will Bell presented an opening for Denbigh and Craig Pritchard was on hand to apply the finish and put the hosts 1-0 up.

Rhyl continued to enjoy good possession with Michael Walsh and Sam Downey enjoying possession in the midfield whilst James Murphy sought to stretch the home defence but they remained organised and were able to cope with Rhyl’s attempts to force an equaliser. Close to the final whistle substitute Mark Connolly’s free kick was deflected away from goal and the rebound was headed over from close range by Tony Davies. A Michael Walsh corner hit the cross bar whilst another aerial scramble saw strong shouts for hand ball from Rhyl but once again the appeals were turned down.

Overall the consecutive defeats to Airbus and Denbigh were a disappointment for Rhyl and illustrates clearly the importance of the close season for the club in planning for the future and mounting a stronger challenge for promotion next season.
