Rhyl FC 4 - 3 Fleetwood Town

Rhyl had a positive pre-season warm up against a young talented Fleetwood Town team at Belle Vue.  After the sweltering temperatures of Saturday, the cooler temperatures were more suitable for football and for those supporters who came down to Belle Vue they were rewarded with six goals in the first half.

After an open 5 minutes where both sides looked lively new signing Matthew Worrall opened the scoring in the 7th minute.  Good play down the left hand side saw Worrall presented with a chance inside the penalty box and he made no mistake scoring from close range.  Rhyl continued to create chances but the equaliser came in the 22nd minute. Jay Matete’s strong run was rewarded as he slotted the ball home confidently to bring the scores level.

Rhyl’s scorer Worrall picked up a knock and was replaced Kristian Pierce and he made an early impact scoring from close range in the 26th minute to put Rhyl back into the lead.  The advantage was short-lived as Sam O’Halleron  met a cross from the Fleetwood Town right, and his header down bounced high off the pitch and evaded Rory Crowther in the Rhyl goal to bring the young side back level two minutes later.

The next goal came just three minutes later when James Murphy made a strong run down the Rhyl right and after beating two defenders he calmly placed his shot past the Fleetwood keeper to make it 3-2.  The next good chance came to Kristian Pierce but the keeper was out to block the shot and shortly afterwards Pierce played in Murphy but once again the keeper saved.

A minute before the break good work from the impressive Pierce allowed Mike Pritchard to receive the ball inside the penalty area and he showed good composure and placed the ball into the left hand side of the goal past the despairing keeper to put Rhyl 4-2 up at the break.

Inevitably with a large number of subsitutes the game lost some of its initial rhythm with Joao Morelli hitting the cross bar for the visitors whilst Max Peate headed narrowly over for Rhyl.

Subsitute Katlego Mashigo produced a fine finish when he received a ball from the Fleetwood left and he applied a quality finish to bring the visitors back into the match in the 66th minute.

Both sides continued to press for further goals but Rory Crwother made a number of good saves in the last 20 minutes whilst substitute Aaron Pomeyie had a good chance towards the end but was denied by the keeper.

The positives for Rhyl were a lively performance infront of goal with some clinical finishing for the 4 Rhyl goals in the first half which bodes well for the season ahead. The main negative of the evening was an injury to second half substitute James Stead who was carried off the field of play after a collision with two players.
