Match Report

Wigan Athletic came from behind as a Callum Lang hat trick in 8 minutes secured the win for the Development Squad from the Championship side at Belle Vue.

Gregor Rioch’s side made a positive opening dominating possession with the Lilywhites looking lively on the break. The first chance for the hosts came in the 14th minute when James Murphy made good ground before laying the ball off to Matthew Worrall and the striker advanced on goal from a tight angle and Jordan Perrin was able to save in the Wigan goal.
For the visitors Joe Piggott and Callum Lang looked dangerous and for most of the first half Rory Crowther was called upon to keep the Wigan strikeforce at bay.

The breakthrough came for Rhyl in the 25th minute. A ball from the left found Gareth Partridge in the area and the wingback’s ball fizzed across the box and fell to Aaron Hassell inside the area. His shot went through a crowd of players with Reece Fairhurst claiming the final touch to put the Lilywhites into the lead.

With Wigan retaining the lion's share of play, Rhyl remained compact and looked to retain the ball at all times and play out with confidence with Murphy, Hassall and the lively Worrall looking to retain possession when the home side looked to move forward.

The visitors had a number of chances, defender Tylor Golden forced his way into the area on the Wigan left but his shot was saved by Crowther and the impressive Callum Lang created space inside the Rhyl box but his shot went narrowly wide.

The second half continued in similar fashion with Callum Lang continuing his dual against Rory Crowther with the Rhyl keeper coming out on top. As the game went on the hosts found it more difficult to retain possession and a changed line up in the second half relied on the break to seek opportunities against a disciplined young Wigan side.

With Jonathan Hill-Dunt replacing Rory Crowther in the Rhyl goal, the fitness of the Wigan squad began to make a difference and Callum Lang was able to take full advantage. A good ball saw the striker played through and he was able to finish calmly past Dunt to bring the scores level in the 75th minute. 5 minutes later a similar ball through resulted in the same outcome as Lang finished smartly past Dunt to claim the lead.

The scoring and the 8 minute hat trick was completed in the 83rd minute. Stewart Carroll lost possession about 40 yards from goal and the young striker, full of confidence ran at the Rhyl defence went past a couple of defenders and then instead of shooting went round the keeper and finished from two yards out to score a very well taken goal. The young striker who netted 10 times for Morecambe in League Two last season whilst out on loan from Wigan took full advantage of his late chances and this late spell secured the win for Wigan.
