Rhyl FC 3 - 5 Llandudno

Home | 02 October 2018 | Attendance: 160
A goals galore encounter at the Belle Vue saw Rhyl lose out to WPL side, Llandudno and exit the Cup.

A bright opening to the first half saw Sullivan's 2nd minute free kick pushed away before Pritchard's long drive was also saved by Llandudno keeper, Ryan Roberts.

However the Lilywhites were unable to keep up the intensity and Llandudno grew into the game.

The visitor's nearly took the lead when Mike Pritchard looped a header towards goal but saw it rebound off the post.

Cook then had a decent chance for Rhyl as he found space on the edge of the area but shot straight at Roberts.

Minutes later though, Rhyl found themselves behind,  the makers of their own downfall again. George Harry dispossessed Matt Cook midway in the Rhyl half before curling a shot in from 18 yards to give Llandudno the lead.

The Lilywhites struggled to gain any sort of rhythm after falling behind and were unable to cause Llandudno any serious problems before the half ended.

A hectic start to the second half saw 4 goals in 6 minutes; as the lead changed hands on two occasions.

Mike Pritchard volleyed in from close range to bring Rhyl level before an own goal a minute later gave Rhyl a quickfire and surprising lead - Ieuan Hewitt turning the ball into his own net after connecting with a low cross.

Llandudno though responded immediately as former Lilywhite, Toby Jones finished into the bottom corner after a scramble in the box. 3 minutes later and the game was turned on it's head once again as another former Lilywhite, Alun Webb turned his marker and smashed an effort past Hill-Dunt to make it 2-3 to the visitors.

Rhyl pushed forwards for an equaliser but in doing so, had to leave gaps at the back, space which Llandudno exploited as John Owen was sent through on goal and slotted in for Llandudno's fourth.

A collison in the area saw Llandudno awarded a penalty late on but Mike Pearson failed to extend the away side's lead even further as he blasted his spot kick over the bar.

With the game seemingly fizzling out, Jame Murphy lit up the Belle Vue with a spectacular dipping drive from 25 yards to restore a glimmer of hope for Rhyl with 9 minutes remaining.

The game however was put to bed 3 minutes from time when John Owen, once again ran through on goal and placed his effort into the bottom corner.

The goalfest was brought to a close with the score Rhyl 3-5 Llandudno.  The Lilywhites able to take many positives from the game against a tough WPL side.
