Match Report

In an entertaining match which could have gone either way, Rhyl emerged with a point which could easily have been 3 by the end of the match.

During the first half the match was initial cagey with few clear cut opportunities until in the 17th minute under pressure from Toby Jones, Shane Sutton's back pass to David Jones in the Newtown goal caught him unaware and the ball went straight into the net to give the Lilywhites an unexpected lead.

Newtown grew more into the match and drew level in the 40th minute when pressure built following a harshly awarded free kick against the Lilywhites and from the resulting corner Jason Oswell rose well and headed home to leave the match even at half time.

In the second half the game became stretched and from a Tom Hartley free kick which was saved low down by Jones, Newtown broke down the other end and a cross from the Newtown left saw Oswell with an opportunity to put the home side in the lead which he took in the 61st Minute. The ex-Rhyl striker completed his hat trick 5 minutes later as his shot was perfectly placed past Owen Evans to put the home side into a commanding 3-1 lead.

However 4 minutes later the Lilywhites were back in the match as a long ball forward allowed Rio Ahmadi the opportunity to run clear on goal and calmly finish past Jones, who then promptly got booked for unsporting behaviour in refusing to release the ball for the restart. Almost immediately from the restart Rhyl broke again and Rob Hughes took advantage and scored the equaliser to put the Lilywhites back into the match.

During the last 20 minutes the match was almost end to end, and the Lilywhites carved out plenty of opportunities to grab the winner. Toby Jones tested the keeper from 45 yards from a free kick which saw Jones back peddling frantically, Ahmadi hit the cross bar with a crafted finish and then breaks on goals saw Ahmadi go narrowly wide, sub Buckley failed in a 1 on 1 with the keeper and the rebound was blocked.

Whilst Niall McGuinness' side were delighted to come back from 3-1 down it was almost a sense of disappointment that all three points were not taken as the Lilywhites extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to five matches.
