Match Report

It was a tale of two penalties for the second match running for Rhyl FC as they secured a berth in the Quarter Finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup at the expense of Llandudno FC.

Manager Niall McGuinness rang the changes after the defeat at Cefn Druids with 5 changes to the starting XI .  Carl Lamb and Oliver Buckley who came on at half time last Friday and made a difference, earned a starting spot at the expense of their replacements, Rob Hughes and Kristian Pierce whilst Dan Collins, Rakim Newton and Zyaac Edwards replaced the rested trio of Jamie Brewerton, Alex Jones and Toby Jones.

The first half saw Llandudno press hard for a break through with a first half Lee Thomas opportunity being the hosts best chance of securing a lead in the interval.

The second half continued in a similar vein with neither side dominating for long spells with the hosts going close through Danny Hughes and Marc Williams.

Mid way through the half Rob Hughes and Kristian Pierce replaced the injured Zyaac Edwards and Oliver Buckley and shortly afterwards Pierce had the opportunity to put Rhyl into the lead.  The referee awarded a penalty to Rhyl for handball, to many protests from the home side, and Pierce made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Llandudno pressed for an equaliser and they thought their opportunity had come when a second penalty was awarded for handball. Lee Thomas stepped up to take the spot kick but his effort was saved by Owen Evans in the Rhyl goal.  Despite the hosts endeavours an equaliser didn't come and the Lilywhites celebrated the win and a place in the last 8 for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
