Rhyl start their Huws Gray Alliance campaign at home to Mid Wales team Guilsfield on Saturday 12th August. Niall McGuinness’ team will be looking to make a good start but the Guils are expected to provide a tough challenge.

Over the last 5 seasons Guilsfield have finished in the top half of the season each time with their best performances being 3rd in 2014/15 and a 4th place finish the following season. Last time out Guilsfield finished in 8th place on 43 points.

Looking back to our previous spell in the Huws Gray Alliance we faced the Mid Wales team at the Corbett Sports Stadium four times and emerged victorious on each occasion. Co-incidentally 2 of these 3 seasons started with a visit from Guilsfield including our Championship winning season.

The first encounter was in November 2010 when we claimed a 4-0 win. Goals from Shawn Dowling, Russ Courtney, Chris Williams and Stuart Rudd earned all three points in front of a crowd of 276.

The 2011/12 season also started with a home match against Guilsfield and on this occasion the Lilywhites emerged as 2-0 winners on the 13th August with Russ Courtney and Jason Oswell the scorers. Later on that season we were to also face the Mid Wales team in the League Cup. A 6-1 victory was claimed with goals from Stefan Halewood, Paul Mooney, a Jason Oswell hat trick and one from Chris Melia coming off the bench.

The 2012/13 season start had the same opponents, this time on the 18th August and once again a win was claimed for the Lilywhites at the start of the infamous invincibles season. The goals coming from a double from Russ Courtney, and a goal a piece from Paul McManus, Jimmy Gambino and Steve Lewis. The starting XI that day was Alex Ramsey, Matty Woodward, Stefan Halewood, Russ Courtney, Liam Benson, Mark Powell, Paul McManus, Danny Hughes, Jimmy Gambino, Steve Lewis and Mark Evans. On the bench was Dave Forbes, Scott Beckett, Danny Jarrett and Tom Rowlands.

For this season Guilsfield have seen a change in the hotseat with ex Rhyl favourite Danny Barton stepping down due to work commitments. Nathan Leonard, assistant to Danny for the last two season, has been appointed as Player-Manager for the 2017-18 season. Club stalwart Bernie Jones will assist Nathan, with Danny still being involved with the club in a playing capacity. Danny steered the club to the quarter final of last season's Welsh Cup, claiming a WPL scalp when they defeated Cardiff Met University on the day when Huws Gray Alliance sides dismissed 4 WPL’s sides. Guilsfield were defeated by the eventual winners Bala Town 3-0 in the Quarter final and Danny maintained the club's position in the top half of the league.

The club are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and have a launched a new club crest to celebrate the occasion.
