The Lilywhites

The pre-season action continues to come quickly for the Lilywhites with a trip across the border on Saturday to our old friends from the past Witton Albion (kick off 3pm).  The histories of both sides were interlinked during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s as we both had long spells in the Cheshire League. Rhyl’s promotion to the Northern Premier League in 1985 saw the two teams reunited.

The Cheshire side won the Evo Stik First Division South play-offs last season. Two recent signings will have contrasting views of Wincham Park, Albion’s home since 1989. Sam Downey was part of the Spalding United squad who were defeated by Witton in the play-off final last season. Alex Titchiner will have happier memories having scored nearly 60 goals for the Cheshire side during his spells at the club.

Niall McGuinness side will be looking to build on the positives from Thursday nights encounter against a young Shrewsbury Town academy side which resulted in a 4-4 draw.  The hat trick from Mark Connolly will have boosted the squad and the last two games have provided an excellent opportunity for McGuinness to allow younger fringe squad members such as Connor Rankin, Luke Fitzpatrick and Matty Morris to step up to the first team.  Another notable debut was Luke Wilmot who appeared in the second half in goal to replace Rory Crowther who has used the pre-season period to cement his claim for the no 1 spot.  16 year old Luke came on for the second half and impressed with some good saves and confident distribution.
