The Magnificent Seven for Development Ladies

09 September 2018

Rhyl Ladies Development Team got off to a flying start to the season with a 7-1 home win against Penrhyn Bay Ladies the newly formed team. With Aled Davies and Iwan Davies taking over the Managerial responsibilities for the 2018/19 season, Rhyl made a confident start and had the majority of the early play. They looked to be taking the lead until a Penrhyn Bay defender handled close to the line.  A penalty was awarded and Sade Benjamin converted in the 11th minute.  As the game went on Penrhyn Bay, who included 5 team members aged 16 grew in confidence and it wasn't until the 38th minute Rhyl added their second.  After a chance for Rhyl was cleared the ball fell to midfielder Sophie Haywood who blasted a half volley home from the edge of the area.

Penrhyn Bay's hopes of getting back into the game with the wind in their favour fell apart in the first 10 minutes as Rhyl extended their lead.  Amy Woodbridge fired home in the 48th minute and scored her second just 4 minutes later to put Rhyl 4-0 up. A minute later a miskick in the Penrhyn Bay defence left the keeper with no chance and the own goal put Rhyl further into the lead.

In the 66th minute Molly Watkinson was able to pull one back from the penalty spot after a hand ball in the Rhyl area but any hopes of a comeback were quashed after Amy Woodbridge grabbed her hat trick in the following minute.  Trisha Hartley scored with a lifted shot from the right in the 69th minute to round off a fine opening day win for Rhyl Development Ladies as they look to progress in only their second season.
